Torn from their home by a hand in the sky, colorful spirits struggle against a tyrannical pink-and-blue binary in this surreal, wordless piece of mixed media animation about the pursuit and defense of authentic selfhood.

Thine Own Self is a zero budget labor of love made by one person in five months. Reminiscent of a dreamlike fairy tale, the film expresses a desire for liberation from rigid systems of oppression that impose control and conformity. Through handcrafted visuals in combination with original music, it pays tribute to the truthful inner versions of ourselves that persist within, against all odds–like a pent-up whisper that must be set free.

This film was made in partial fulfillment of an MFA in Film in the Department of Transmedia, College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, Spring 2021.
